Talk about getting some good publicity for your recycling campaign…

Anna May Daulton Elementary School truly believes recycling is a community effort!  The community really showed this to be true on Earth Day, April 22^nd.

Radio Disney donated prizes for our recycling contest. We had a drawing for the grand prize. It was a High School Musical 2 poster signed by the cast!

Texas Rangers Captain made a surprise visit during lunch for the class that recycled the most. Needless to say the students were thrilled to see him. He went around giving everyone a high 5 for recycling.

Every student that recycled on Earth Day got to sign the tree. What a wonderful way to leave your mark!

There is an old saying…it takes a village to raise a child.  Here’s the new saying “it takes a community to educate a child on recycling”.  Children learn by example!

Hopefully you’re doing something to celebrate Earth Day, thinking about Earth Day, spreading the word about Earth Day, etc.  Earth Day is a great time to really get people thinking about recycling.  Hopefully, since they’ve begun thinking about recycling they’ll begin to act.  The result will hopefully mean a lot more recycling for your school or organization which in turn means more $$$$, bucks, moolah for you as well.
In case you were curious, we’ve totalled up the amount of money we’ve helped schools and organizations raise since our inception. The amount topped $12,000,000.00 dollars!  In 2007 alone our schools and organizations raised $1.6 million.  Millions of dollars just for recycling.  Mother Earth is smiling.

Thought provoking… at least the end of it is.  Definitely something more to think about on a daily basis.  Now, I’m assuming that once she replaces the cartridge, the old one got recycled. 

Time to get your ‘Third R’ on.  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for Earth Day.  However, don’t stop when Earth Day has come and gone.  Keep on keepin’ on.  Er, whatever; just keep recycling.

Somebody was thinking outside the box, so to speak, and told us of a great way to get people involved.  Simply place an ad on Craigslist about collecting phones, cartridges, etc.  Apparantly it worked.  Sounds like they’ve received quite a few cell phones.  Check it out:

Oh, I guess they also placed an ad on Yahoo’s Freecycle.  Now that’s using your noggin.

You haven’t read it you say…?  Well, you’re missing a great story and message.

Here’s a rather obvious hint:  The hands belong to Leonid Stadnik of the Ukraine.  Google his name to find out more.  Quite interesting.  In fact, this post has very little relevance to recycling (which you should be doing anyway), we just found the picture fascinating.

Floyd Elementary School recently held a Cell Phone Drive. Their incentive - “Eyeball pizza, served by Shrek”. (It’s great to be a kid.)  Well, as you can see they did it.  Their cell phone drive was a success and as you can see, via the pics, Shrek did in fact serve up his famous “Eyeball Pizza”.

The kids had great fun visiting with Shrek and eating his wonderful creation!

April 22, 2008 is just around the corner… how are YOU planning on celebrating Earth Day??!! Many schools plan on starting a collection contest, “caught you recycling” hand-outs, holding cell phone drives, etc. Need more ideas on how to celebrate this fine and do-good event? Walnut Glen Academy is Going Green this school year!  For the past several years, our school has promoted recycling ink jet cartridges, cell phones, PDA’s, etc through information in our PTA newsletter and through the use of a “Recycle Tower” at the front of the school.  The tower is just a plastic cabinet with drawers where we’ve labeled it using CFK labels and posters.  It is at kid level and I think that really helps get the message to them and gives them a convenient place to recycle AT ANY TIME.  We have also hosted contests, which are a great way to focus the attention on recycling and to help make it a part of our WGA families fiber.  We didn’t want it to only be something done once or twice a year, but that recycling would become something each student, parent and staff member thought of doing daily.  This year we established a “GO GREEN THEME OF THE MONTH” and each month we have added a new topic - our February theme is “Recycling Misc Items” (such as ink cartridges, cell phones, PDA, DVD’s - basically everything that CFK accepts).  Our Green Team was formed as an elite group of environmentally aware students championing the message to the rest of our students, faculty and staff!  The team meets weekly after school to create jingles for the morning announcements and make posters for the hallways and they give the adults ideas for how to tell kids to recycle.  For special promotions such as a CFK contest, they stand out in the morning drop off area helping students out of their cars and at the same time reminding both students and parents to recycle.
