Carbon Footprints

At St. Phillip the Apostle School, students are learning about the impact their actions have on our planet by learning about their Carbon Footprints. As a fun reminder to recycle and reuse, each student that brings in an item to recycle with CFK, like a cell phone or a laptop, is given a “footprint” on which they can write their name and put up on the wall. The footprints paper the school hallways and remind everyone how important it is to recycle!

here are some of the students posing with their footprints:

The bags are part of a reusable bag program that encourages students and families to use reusable grocery bags instead of plastic ones. Way to Go Green St. Phillip’s!

Who doesn’t love free pizza?

cartridges-for-kids-002

Brenda, the contact at Loganville Elementary, knows just what it takes to get students to recycle… free pizza! The class that brought in the most recyclable items at the end of the contest won a free medium pizza from a local pizza shop.  Now that’s motivation!

so head over to your local Papa Johns, Dominos, or Black Jack Pizza and see if they would be willing to sponsor your recycling efforts, it never hurts to ask!

Great job Loganville, keep up the good work!

Beaver Brook’s Recycling Tree

picture-001Beaver Brook tried a slightly different spin on their tree: rather than dedicating a leaf to each student or each item, each week Beaver Brook’s program director tallied each class’ contributions and wrote the total on a leaf, which was then allowed to “fall” to the foot of the tree so students could see which classes earned the most points.

Great job Beaver Brook, for recycling, and for coming up with a fun and creative way to display your program’s success with your recycling tree!

Last Green Gift Idea

bookGotten used to your twice-a-week green gift fix?  Still need help finding green products to invest in?  Go online and pick up this book-The Lazy Environmentalist by Josh Dorfman.  This book offers a new approach to environmentalism–recognizing that most of us will not chain ourselves to a tree or indulge in a purely macrobiotic diet.  Josh Dorfman offers chic, stylish ways to shop green without sacrificing your fashion sense, or your wallet.  We like his approach because he tries to “make it so totally easy, fun, and attractive to ‘do the right thing’…” that people will want to “do it every time.”  Check out his website for more info.  His next installment, The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget will be out in 2009!

Green Garbage Gift Idea

compostOk, so far we’ve inundated you with pretty-looking green gifts to give this holiday season.  Time to get down and dirty…with compost, that is.  While this might not be the best gift for the “hopeless romantic” in your life, it’s guaranteed to be a good gift for that budding environmentalist.

This compost starter kit gives you everything you need to get your composting on.  It includes a carrier to collect kitchen scraps and cart them out to your outside bin, charcoal filters, one pound of starter compost for oustide, a bottle of compost maker to help convert all those orange peels to nutrient-rich dirt, and a thermometer to help figure out when that pile is ready to use in your garden.

Need a creative gift idea for the neighborhood gardening lady that spends hours outside?  Or what about the little boy on your Christmas list that already loves to play in dirt?  This composting set would be great for them both.  Click here to go grab one, and get your hands dirty this year in the name of helping the planet!

Check back on Wednesday for another great green gift idea!
